November 18 Update...

Hi Parents,

Happy Thanksgiving!  I hope you have a wonderful week and find some time to relax and reflect on what you are thankful for! I will miss my wonderful students next week.  Thank you to those who were extra "on the ball" and got me the stocking stuffers early!  Remember to send them in a closed bag marked "December Activity".  Also, I appreciate the extra halloween candy that has come in this week.  We've been  going through it!

Phonics/Grammar: This week, we learned all about the r-blends.  We generated a word web for each blend, we worked in our Word Study Notebook to sort the words, and we practiced writing our words on white boards.  We also learned about antonyms.  We made an antonym flip book.

Reading: We continued to work on identifying problem/solution and main idea in stories.  We read several stories and completed a graphic organizer, focusing on these story elements.  We read a special story called The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush and we used real buckskin to illustrate a story retelling! (Okay, so it was really crumpled up manilla paper!) We also worked in small groups retelling stories, decoding challenging words, and making inferences.  We also enjoyed listening to stories and taking AR quizzes with our AR helpers!

Writing:  We wrote stories this week about our Thanksgiving traditions.  We also wrote wonderful acrostic poems about what we are thankful for.  I encouraged the children to share these poems with their families on Thanksgiving!

Math:  We are revisiting addition and subtraction strategies this week and next week.  We learned how to add three numbers together as well as how to make equal groups when given a set to be divided (shown through repeated addition).  We continue to work on using our four square method when solving word problems. We've also begun completing what's called "constructed responses", which is a fancy way of saying an open ended word problem with more than one possible solution. These types of problems encourage children to use those higher level thinking skills and show they can formulate their own logical plan for solving problems.

Social Studies:  We learned about Thomas Jefferson this week and the contributions he made to our country.  We read a big book about him and then worked in small groups to answer comprehension questions.  We also learned about the role that Lewis and Clark took in exploring our newly aquired lands.

Classroom News and Announcements:

Congratulations to Alexis Volckmann for being chosen as this week's Teacher's Helper!  Way to go on that awesome behavior!

Thank you to all who donated time and items to our Thomas Jefferson lunch!  The kids loved it!

I've given the students their homework for the week we return after Thanksgiving. It's a great time to get a head start on this work.  I also returned the superstar quizzes.  I would encourage you to help your child find some time for mastering those facts!  Flash cards are a great car trip activity!

Thank you Mrs. Vansant and Mrs. Farley for your help with AR this week!

Thank you Mrs. Vansant and Mrs. Byrd for your help with the Thomas Jefferson lunch activity!

Please keep my family in your prayers over the week.  My father is having open heart surgery on Monday to repair an aneurysm on his aorta.
