Hi Parents,
We have had an amazing week! Your brilliant children all passed the spelling pre-test with flying colors, so I've posted the new list on Spelling City. Get some preview practice on our new list this weekend! Your child's weekend homework is to go to the site and practice. I'm also very impressed with all of the O.S.C.A.R.S. work this week! Ask your child how many stars they've earned so far! Your child may test every other day. This is to allow all children the opportunity in the morning and also really encourage your child to focus on one task at a time. If your child can do more than one every two days, then you may need to direct them to more challenging options!!! Some very exciting news...Mrs. Abrams and I are planning dates for having a "camp out" at her house on a Friday night. This will involve sleeping out in the woods (okay, really just the Abrams back yard!), listening to campfire stories, and some other fun activities! Keep an eye out for information coming home soon!
Here's what we've done this week...
Phonics/Spelling: We focused on learning Dolch words to help us become better readers and writers. We made a list of -ear/-air words. We completed a sort in our Word Study notebook. We played sparkle to help us improve our listening skills as well as learn our spelling words.
Reading: We read the story Leola and the Honeybears. We focused on skills such as identifying character traits and recognizing inferred meaning through the characters' actions or words. We studied how a character can change throughout a story. We read the book Dusy Locks and the Three Bears and we compared this story to Leola and the Honeybears. We finished our first chapter book read aloud, The Bad Beginning. We took a comprehension test on this test. I had an AMAZING teacher moment I have to share...I finished reading a section of the book and said it was time for recess and all the children yelled "NOOOO, can we skip recess and keep reading?" Ahhh, music to my ears! Needless to say, I've already gotten book two in this series and began reading it today!
Math: We continued to work on our place value unit in math. We learned strategies for skip counting in order to find the groups of 2's, 5's and 10's in a given number. We learned a new technique for helping us to solve word problems. We had a race to order numbers from 100-200, focusing on the value of the digit in the tens and ones place. We played Number Concentration" to help us read the number words to 999. Your child brought this game home, so please practice this with your child. We also met with our 5th grade buddies and taught them how to play Guess My Number!
Social Studies: We are making a book on the five Georgia Regions. We brainstormed facts and ideas learned through our textbook reading and then wrote informative paragraphs about that particular region.
Writing: We finished our first narrative. I modeled the writing process, along with showing the necessary components of a good narrative. You can find your child's writing on display in our hallway!
Class News and Reminders...
Please continue to encourage your child's nightly reading. Three AR tests a week is an easy task if your child is reading 20 minutes a night! Next week, I've told the children anyone passing the AR test on The Bad Beginning does not have to take any other test. It is a 6th grade level book and worth 5 points, compared to the normal .5 point of picture books.
Thank you, Mrs. Byrd, for taking a load off of me and making my O.S.C.A.R.S. cheat sheet book! It's been helpful on some of the tasks!
Remember to send written notes or call the office directly if you have a transportation change. Please do not email me, as sometimes I do not check my email before dismissal or I get busy and forget to tell your child!
There will be no school on Monday for Labor Day...Enjoy your long weekend!
