September 7, 2012 Update

Dear Parents,

We have had an amazing and very productive week!  Make sure you check out your child's first unit math test. As you can see, the expectation of your child with this new common core integration is that he/she can not only correctly answer the problems, but also fully explain why they got the answer that they did. This skill of communicating in mathematical terms has been practiced every day here at school.  We have one more class need...which I am reminded of just as the stomach virus has hit Kemp!  We are in need of felt that can be cut into 3x3 or 4x4 squares for the kids to use as dry erase erasers. We need at least 26 squares...any takers???   You will also find our class directory in your child's red folder today. I've explained to my PRECIOUS students that the picture on the front cover (the one of me signaling to call me!) is meant for parents, not them. I explained that I get to hear their beautiful voices every day and they don't need to be calling my cell phone.

Phonics/Grammar:  This week, we learned the long a  (spelled "ai") versus short a spelling pattern. Again, we are moving on with a new spelling list next week. You'll find the new words and the phonics focus on spelling city for extra practice this weekend.  We also learned all about the three different types of verbs (action, helping, and linking).

Reading:  We read the story Borreguita and the Coyote.  We learned the difference between a detail and a "key detail" used in summarizing a story.  We also learned the important skill of using context clues to figure out the meaning of unknown words in challenging stories. We played a game with silly nonsense words and used the rest of the sentence to help us figure out the possible meaning.  We compared Borreguita to the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff.  We read several chapters in our second book in the Series of Unfortunate Events.  The kids are so excited to check out and read the other books in this series, but I have asked them not to do so until we finish this book.

Writing:  We reviewed the components of a personal narrative (hook, topic sentence, details, closing) and we independently wrote stories.

Math:  We began "number talks" to develop our mathematical communication and problem solving skills (look for another video coming soon!), we learned several games to practice our place value skills.  We talked about the Step-by-Step Model Drawing approach to problem solving and we completed word problems on double digit addition, subtraction, and missing addend problems.  We also began something called "Math Pyramids" to challenge our addition and subtraction skills...get your child to show you a "Math Pyramid" at home!  We practiced skip counting by 5's, 10's and 100's...but we don't start with 0!  Your child should be able to skip count by those numbers when beginning at any number (ie...231, 241, 251, etc)

Social Studies:  We completed our unit on the five Georgia Regions. We completed our book and put it in our Interactive Notebook.

Class News and Reminders...
The Book Fair is coming NEXT week...Your child is bringing home an order form today.  We will be visiting the library this week for a preview and then beginning next Monday, he/she can purchase books every morning or afternoon.  I will also have a wish list with items for our class library.

Thank you to Mrs. Abrams for working so hard on the adorable Class Directory!

Thank you to Mrs. Conner for working on our "chair pockets" for our class!  This was a HUGE project that she took on for us!
