September 28, 2012 Update...

Hi Parents,

We've had a whirlwind of a week!  Can you believe it is October already?  This month will be a busy one, with our camp out at the Abrams on the 19th, movie night at my house for A Series of Unfortunate Events (date TBD), and conference week! Please pay special attention to the calendar located on this blog. I will be updating it weekly as school and social events come up. I was soooo impressed with the Georgia river projects!  I wish you could have seen how wonderful the presentations were!  The children did such a great job and it was evident that they took time to practice at home.  They were all so proud of their work and I know this was a fun way to learn about all of the rivers.  Check out below to see  what else we've done this week...

Phonics/Grammar:  We studied the long u sound spelled u_e.  We created a web of words that followed this rule.  We also looked at short vowel words in which the final consonant is doubled before adding the -ed or-ing suffix.  We studied another list of compound words and created fun flip books.  We also learned the difference between a "subject" and a "noun".  Next week, we will be taking an assessment on all the spelling words and phonics rules we have learned so far this year. Please refer to the spelling city lists or your child's agenda for the words.  This assessment will be a significant determining factor in your child's spelling grade, so please help your child prepare!  We'll be working all week on these words as well.

Reading:  We are almost finished with our 2nd book in A Series of Unfortunate Events!  The kids are mesmerized by this book...I hate to finish it!!!  It's going to be tough to find a read aloud that captures their attention like this one has.  We may just have to take  a vote and see if the class wants to continue on with the series.  In addition to this book, we also read a nonfiction book on Sequoyah. We reviewed the components of a nonfiction book and we learned how to use this book as a resource to find information.  We read a set of multiple choice questions on a text piece and we practiced proving our answers by looking back in the story.

Writing:  We used our research on Sequoyah to begin writing a biography about him.  We began with a topic sentence, included details about his contributions to his people, wrote on his important character traits, and then closed with an excellent ending! We focused on the revising process, which is going back to a written piece and adding to it to make it better or more detailed.  This week, we also pretended to be Sequoyah and created our own written language using symbols, then wrote stories incorporating these symbols.  The kids loved the "animal hides" we used for paper!

Math:  We worked on application of all the addition and subtraction strategies we have been working on over the past two three weeks.  We also worked with fact families and discussed the rules that apply to the numbers in a fact family. We completed activities to work on decomposing larger numbers, adding larger numbers (in the hundreds and thousands), and explaining our addition and subtraction strategies in writing (a very important skill this year!)

Social Studies:  We learned all about Sequoyah and the contributions he made to the Cherokee people through his invention of the written language. We learned about the important character traits he showed; patience and compassion.  We also read an article about the Trail of Tears and answered comprehension questions.

Class News...

Thank you, Mrs. Conner, for the adorable chair pockets!  We are soooo much more organized with our books now!

A big WHOOOP WHOOOP goes to all my 2nd graders for the AWESOME work on our first research project!

Don't forget to keep October 19th open for our fun camp out.  Details will be coming next week.

I will be posting another web cast next week.  I'll email you when it is up and running on the blog.
