Good Afternoon Parents,
Thank you for checking in on room 216 today! We are about to enter a very busy season, so make sure you check out the News section at the bottom and the calendar section to the side so you don't miss out on all the special events coming up! Check out here to see what we've learned this week...
Phonics/Grammar: We learned about the "tch" sound in words. We also learned all about adverbs and the words they modify. We compared these adverbs to adjectives. We completed several activities together to help us identify these tricky parts of speech.
Reading: We are almost finished with our chapter book, The Wide Window. After next week, your child can check out the other books in this series if it is on their level. We read a passage on the water cycle and completed a comprehension task on it. We read the short chapter book, The Lost and Found Game, and answered questions about key details and finding information in a book to completely and thoroughly answer questions. We also read a nonfiction book called The Top of the World about a family who lives in the Arctic. We worked with our book buddies on comprehension strategies and took a quiz on this story.
Writing: We continued to work on our In October books, showing that we can use sensory details to make our writing interesting and exciting for our readers. We also reviewed the parts of a friendly letter and talked about important conventions in a letter (capitalization, commas, indention).
Math: We began working with triple digit numbers and talking about the value of each digit, how to adapt our strategies to these higher numbers, and how we can apply our knowledge of number sense to help us add and subtract. We also began looking at strategies for adding multiple numbers at once. Remember, our standard is not to just add and subtract correctly, but to show our place value knowledge when adding and subtracting! It's not enough for your child just to know the algorithm of adding and subtracting, but to have a deep understanding how numbers relate to each other and change when operations are completed.
Health: This week, we learned about the importance of staying away from drugs. We had a guest speaker from the Army National Guard on Friday who taught us all about his job and the importance of staying drug free if we are to accomplish our goals in life.
Class News and Reminders...
Thank you so much again for my classroom gift!
Thank you to Mrs. Abrams for creating such a special time last Friday for the class! I've heard all week about how wonderful the camp out was!
Next week is Red Ribbon Week! Monday will be "jean"ius day! Be a genius and say no to drugs...everyone should wear their jeans. Tuesday is CRAZY hair day. On Wednesday, wear BLACK. Thursday is RED day and Friday is CRAZY SOCK day!
Mrs. Abrams is organizing some special, but ACADEMIC fun on Wednesday for us! This time will not be open to visitors, but if you are interested in helping, contact her.
Remember, no costumes are to be worn to school.
November 14th will be 2nd grade's day for our Thanksgiving Feast in our school cafeteria. You'll want to mark your calendars to join us for lunch that day. I'll be sending the time soon!
Our field trip to the Etowah Indian Mounds is the day before our Thanksgiving Break begins. If you are going out of town early, just indicate that on the form and return it so I don't harass you for not sending it back in :)
We are once again running low on CLOROX WIPES! If every child could send in one tub, I think we will get through flu and cold season!
