Hi Parents,
The Kemp Book Fair began today! It will be here until next Thursday. There are some fabulous chapter books out right now that would be excellent for the students to read. On that note, we retook our Scholastic Reading Inventory and I was so impressed with our progress. The program states that on average, students should gain 75-100 points in a year. We have had some students gain over 500 points since the beginning of the year and our average growth has been 200 points! I love reading and I'm obviously surrounded by a group of kids with that same love! I'm so proud! Check out what else has been happening in room 216...
Reading: We began a new chapter book read aloud called Flawed Dogs. It's a very funny and adventurous story about an orphan girl and a priceless dog who wind up becoming fast friends. We also began reading our next independent chapter books that we were able to pick out on our own. After each chapter, we worked on various comprehension or language skills related to our chapter. We read several short stories to practice reading fluency as well.
Math: This week, we worked on strengthening our knowledge of operations in math. We worked on number bonds, which is looking at two numbers in a fact family and figuring out which operation to perform to find the third missing number. We also worked in depth on reading word problems and writing the equation that matches that word problem, then using our strategy of choice to solve. During the month of March, we are also having a special math competition called "March Mathness". We solve one challenging word problem each day, and those getting it correct have their name put in a bucket for a special drawing on each Friday.
Social Studies: We began learning about Jimmy Carter and his work with civil rights and ending segregation. We read a biography book about him, watched a webcast about his childhood, and completed an organizer about important events in his life.
Classroom News and Reminders...
Thank you to everyone who donated wipes, skittles, and light bulbs! You guys ROCK!
The end of the nine weeks is today! Report cards will be coming home next week. There should be no surprises, as our grades are taken straight from the work that has been coming home. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know and I'll schedule a time for us to sit down and talk.
If your child met his/her AR goal, Mrs. Huffstetler will invite them to a special celebration in the media center. Remember, AR goals consist of not only points, but comprehension as well! We will be setting new goals on Monday.
The book fair is going on until next Thursday! We will preview the fair on Monday afternoon, so your child will come home with a wish list that day.
Next week, please help your child find the correct scootpad assignment. I am now assigning individualized homework related to our current standards. If your child does not choose the assigned work, they will just be doing random 2nd grade work. I am assigning much more challenging work, but many students are choosing to do "self-paced" which is not the correct work. I've shown everyone how to log in and which button to select, but they may still need your help.
I'm so proud of the students reading!!! For a special treat, we are going to have "POP-N-READ" on Monday! Your child may bring his/her favorite book from home, a blanket, pillow, or other cozy stuffed animal and anything that POPS such as bubblegum, popcorn, and a can of soda. Everything MUST fit in his/her book bag.
