Dear Parents,
Thank you for visiting today. We had fun at the Fun Run on Thursday. The kids have also enjoyed the rewards they earned. Make sure you encourage complete collection of pledges by Thursday, as any collected after that date are not included in the reward that our class gets. The students also voted on a "NO PENCIL" day that they will get if all pledges are collected. Read the following to see what else we've done this week...
Phonics/Spelling: We worked hard learning our new list of words. We used them in sentences and played several games using these words. We worked with a the folktale, Jack and the Beanstalk, to look for various vowel patterns in words.
Reading: We are almost finished with our read aloud chapter book, Flawed Dogs. The children have enjoyed hearing about the adventures of Sam, the main character in the story. We also completed our personal choice chapter books this week and took AR tests on them. We read two different versions of the fairytale, Cinderella, and compared the two stories. We learned how to identify the central message in a fairytale, folktale, or fable.
Math: We completed our subtraction lapbooks to help with our memorization of math facts. Please encourage your child to spend time on Math Magician (link found below) to sharpen his/her addition and subtraction skills. We began our unit on multiplication. We learned what the symbol means as well as how a multiplication problem relates to addition. We also learned how to draw the model using an array. We finished up our "march mathness" word problem competition this Friday too. We worked on word problems requiring multi-step equations.
Writing: We learned how to use an organizer to write a multi-paragraph paper. We began writing our introductory and body paragraphs on Jimmy Carter. We will complete these papers next week. I'm so impressed with the students writing ability!
Social Studies: We completed our unit on Jimmy Carter and his historical contributions. We read several biographies and discussed his childhood, adult life, and the major accomplishments while he was president.
Class News...
Thank you to Mrs. Farley, who is getting a check book registry for each child to have during our economics unit!
Spring Break is next week, April 8-12. I hope you enjoy this break with your family.
I have the autism t-shirts here if you purchased one. I will be sending them home on Monday. Please have your child wear his/her shirt or a BLUE shirt on Friday in support of autism awareness.
