We have had such an amazing week! I am absolutely thrilled at what the children have been doing in the area of narrative writing! We have also settled nicely into our routine and we are so close to filling up our marble jar. I wonder what the children will choose as their FIRST marble party? Please check out below to find out what specifically we have been doing in each subject area. Also look at the calendar at our upcoming important dates.
Phonics/Spelling: This week we worked on a review of blends (group 1) and the /k/ sound when followed by a short vowel, long vowel, or /oo/ sound. We also memorized how to spell five words to help with our reading and writing fluency. We played several games, worked on our white boards, and completed a sorting activity. We took our spelling test on Friday (WOOHOO!!! to those awesome grades!)
Reading: We began the chapter book Sarah Plain and Tall. We also read the story Ruby's Wish and discussed the story structure, also answering who, what, why and where questions. We discussed how to identify cause and effect in this story as well. We read the story Ruby Bridges and compared the characters, settings, problems, and solutions. We completed an organizer to show our comprehension of the two stories.
Writing: We looked at several excellent authors and what strategies they use in their stories to grab our attention. We made a chart of their strategies; weaving setting details throughout the story (what we see, hear, taste, feel, and smell), writing what characters say and think, and using similes and metaphors to explain details. The children worked during our writers' workshop to incorporate these strategies when writing.
Math: We continued our discussion of number representation, discussing the many forms of numbers. We used our hundred chart to help us skip count (+1, -1, +10, -10, etc). We had several number talks, solving double digit addition problems. We completed some fun arrow math activities, using pushpins to jump on the number line.
Social Studies: We learned all about the five Georgia Regions; Coastal Plains, Piedmont, Appalachian Plateau, Valley and Ridge, Blue Ridge Mountains. Your child must choose one of these regions to complete the tourism brochure on. Remember, a grade will be taken for the presentation component of this project. Please allow your child to be creative, but also thorough, when completing this brochure.
Class News and Announcements...
Congratulations to Sophia Newlin for being chosen as our CELEBRITY this week! Wow!!! Awesome Behavior!!!
Thank you to Mrs. Abrams and Mrs. Newlin for working on several class projects.
Thank you Mrs. DeFoor for the awesome class directory. I have not heard from anyone not wanting their information, so the hard copies will come home next week.
Please make sure you are checking your child's agenda nightly. This is our main source of daily communication. Also, if you are not receiving class emails, let me know as soon as possible.
We had our very first FUN FRIDAY this week! Remember, your child needs to earn the right to attend this activity. This includes completing the expected amount of class work as well as exhibiting mature, responsible, and trustworthy behavior.
Dinner Conversation Starters...
*Ask your child how he/she would have felt to be in Ruby Bridges position of being yelled at by mobs of angry adults
*Ask your child what the direction of the arrows mean when jumping on the hundred chart
*Ask your child what the story Fireflies was about and what the author did to make the story so interesting to read
*Ask your child to tell you the what EEKK means when they are doing "READ TO SOMEONE" during Daily 5
