August 16, 2013 Update...

Dear Parents and Students,
Thank you for visiting the blog today!  We've had a wonderful first full week of school.  I am so excited about the upcoming year.  I see so much potential in all of the students. Our behavior is right on track and I am very impressed at how quickly the children have adjusted to our schedule and routine.  Read below to find out what we've been working on in each subject area.  Also, visit the "Class News" section below to find out important information about our class and our school.

Phonics/Grammar:  We reviewed the 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade site word lists.  We looked at how to write sentences with great detail in a lesson called "how to write HOMERUN sentences".   We read a book called Yo! Yes! to help us understand the importance of punctuation.  During morning work, we reviewed when to use capital letters and when not to.

Reading:  We read the book Nine For California and answered who, where, when, and why questions about the story. We looked at the story structure and wrote a summary telling how the beginning of the story introduced the characters, how the middle told the challenges of the characters, and how the problems were resolved in the end.  We practiced choosing books from our class library and building up our independent reading stamina.

Writing:  We all talked about what good writers do before they begin writing a story. We all got a "writer's notebook" to record memorable moments in.  I modeled brainstorming ideas for a story and then turning those ideas into complete sentences.  The children then began writing their first narrative.

Math:  We learned the four ways to represent two and three digit numbers (standard form, word form, hundreds/tens/ones, and expanded form).  We played a game of "triple war" with  a partner to help us practice making the largest three digit number possible.  We discussed the difference between "place" and "value" when talking about numbers.  We also played a dice game to practice various ways to represent numbers.

Science:  We adopted a tree and observed the bark, branches, and ground below.  We will watch our tree all year long and discuss the effects the season has on our tree.

Social Studies:  We created a name "glyph" to show our uniqueness!  Wondering what a "glyph" is?  Ask your child!  We also designed our own t-shirts showing our individuality.  We finished talking about all five of our rules to live by and discussing ways to exhibit these qualities in and out of the classroom.

Classroom News and Announcements...

Congratulations to Merritt Beasley for being chosen as our first "CELEBRITY OF THE WEEK"!!!  We are so proud of Merritt and his excellent choices here at school.

Thank you to Mrs. Newlin and Mrs. Abrams for stepping up to be our AWESOME room moms this year!!!

Thank you to Mrs. Defoor for working on our class directory!  Look for it soon in your child's G.O. Notebook!

Our media center orientation is next week. After that, your child will be able to check out two new books every night. We will also begin AR next week.

Make sure you are sending your child a HEALTHY snack every day.  Chocolatey treats or candy will not be allowed to be eaten for snack.  Also remember, only water is allowed in the classroom.  Other drinks will have to be saved for lunch.

Way to go, parents, for remembering to check your child's agenda nightly!

Can't seem to get your child to talk about his or her day?  Check out below...

Dinner Conversation Starters...
