August 9, 2013 Update...

Good Afternoon Parents and Students,

Thank you so much for visiting our class blog today. This is the place to come to keep connected!  There is a weekly updated calendar section, fun questions or polls for the kids to answer, excellent resources at the bottom to give your child an extra challenge at home, and of course, the weekly update from Mrs. Capes and I right here.  We've had an awesome three days getting to know your child this week.  Here's what we've been working on...

Language Arts:  We read the book First Day Jitters and talked about how the author used inference in a unique way.  There was definitely a surprise ending to this story.  We wrote about a connection we had with the main character in the story.  We also read the story Chrysanthemum and played a partner game to create as many words as we could using the letters in her name.  One group thought of 48 words!  We completed our preassessment writing assignment; writing a narrative. We had a race to see how quickly we could read 2nd and 3rd grade sight word from a slideshow in order to increase our fluency when reading. We also practiced our speaking and listening skills when we completed a Friend Venn diagram.

Math:  We created a class graph, representing each student's birthday.  We answered questions about the graph in our Math Journal.  We had a number talk and learned what dialogue is expected during this time to grow our use of math terminology.  We also learned how to play double digit war with a partner, creating the biggest number to try and win the round.  We explored several math areas in our room.  We also began our unit  on number representation and completed an activity to review how to decompose a number using manipulatives to help us.

Social Skills:  We began talking about the "Rules to Live by..." that will be implemented in our classroom.  We'll talk more in depth about this at Open House next week.  The children have learned what it means to be an active listener, to not give put-downs, and to do his or her personal best.  We conducted class meetings and modeled inappropriate and appropriate behaviors during the meeting.  I would love for you to have discussions at home about these three rules.  Next week, we'll be covering truthfulness and trustworthiness.  We have also had many conversations about what our expectations are for the class.  We will  be introducing the "strikes" card, which will be located in the back clear pocket of your child's agenda.  Mrs. Capes and I will be communicating with you in regards to your child's behavior through the use of this system.  This is why a nightly check of your child's agenda is key in knowing how your child is doing in class.  We appreciate your support of what we do at school.

Dinner Conversation Starters...(having trouble getting information out of your child about our day?  Here are some prompts for you!)
*Ask your child what was in Mrs. W's memory bag
*Ask your child what was in Mrs. C's memory bag
*What did Joe feel like when you petted him?
* What made the main character in My Little Sister Ate One Hare throw up?
*What did Senora Tansey teach you in Spanish class this week?

Class Reminders and Important Information...

Please remember to send a written note with any dismissal changes. We often go all day without checking our email, especially the first few weeks of school.

If at all possible, allow your child to ride the bus home from school.  It's the safest and most efficient way to get your child home to you. Our Kemp bus drivers are the absolute best and they will take good care of your children.

If your child has not brought in a regular sized pencil box, please do so before Monday.  I think we forgot to add it to our list, but it does help keep a desk neat and organized!

Please mark your calendars for Tuesday, August 13!  It is the Kemp K-2 Open House and I will be sharing lots of information that you will need to know to be informed throughout the year.

Please remember to send a healthy snack with your child everyday.  Please no sugary snacks or drinks.  Water only is allowed in the classroom. No gatorade, fruit drinks, ect.
