October 2, 2013 Update...

Dear Parents,

We have had an awesome week and a half! Please read below for information on what we've been doing in class. I want to give a special thank you to the Beasleys, Mrs. Newlin, Mrs. Abrams, Mrs. Barfield, and Mrs. Kale for helping the students complete the Creek and Cherokee Town project last Friday.  Come see our creations, which are on display in the media center!  Check out what else we've been doing...

Phonics/Spelling: We learned our new spelling patterns as well as reviewing compound words and how we can use the meaning from each individual word to determine the meaning of the compound word.

Reading: We completed our Stone Fox chapter book. We worked on answering comprehension questions in full and complete sentences.  We took the AR test on this book and we completed a close reading, which is where we look closely at context clues to determine the meaning of challenging words and phrases. We worked in small groups on the books Freckle Juice and Kermy to help our reading fluency and vocabulary development.

Writing: We worked closely on incorporating ideas from our mentor texts while working on our narratives.  We used ideas such as making comparisons, including dialogue, using setting details, making inferences (showing not telling), and remembering that BOLD beginning and EXCELLENT ending.  We conferred with each individual student on ways to take our stories to the next level!

Math:  We learned four different ways to add and subtract numbers to 100, showing our place value knowledge.  Your child is now responsible for knowing how to use base ten blocks, use expanded form, a 99 chart, and and open number line to solve problems with sums or differences less than 100.  We will quickly move on to problems involving numbers to 1000 in the next few weeks.  We also learned techniques to help us solve missing addend problems.  We worked on ways to solve a variety of word problems.  We took our unit test on Wednesday.  Results went home in folders!  Tests will be shared at conferences.

Science/Social Studies: We completed our unit on Creek and Cherokee People.  We worked in small groups to design and create a town using an assortment of materials. We showed the houses, gardens, landscape, and games.  We took a final assessment on the Creek and Cherokee People. We then began our science unit on States of Matter: Solids, Liquids and Gases.  We read in our text book and we created an informational clipboard book about the properties of matter.  We conducted an experiment to show that all matter takes up space (marble experiment).

Class News and Reminders...

If you haven't done so already, please go to our sign-up genius website to choose your parent/teacher conference time.  The website will be live until next week. Anyone who does not sign up by then will be assigned a time.

Please email me with any specific questions or concerns you have with your child before our conference.  This will allow me to pull any specific work or materials you may need to see.

We had our first marble party last Friday for filling our jar with marbles (good behavior!!!).  We chose a visit from my dog, TUG as our first party!  He enjoyed the visit and so did the kids.

The STUDY ISLAND homework assignment is due NEXT FRIDAY, which is the end of the nine weeks. I would encourage your child to use this October break to catch up on some of the tasks if he/she hasn't completed them!  Remember, this is a long term assignment and will take more than one or two nights to complete.  If you have questions that were not answered on the information page that I sent home on Monday, please contact me.  Your child is doing STUDY ISLAND here at school in the computer lab and should be comfortable with the website.

Please remember to send a DAILY snack with your child. We are still having at least three or four kids everyday who need to borrow from our extra snack box and we are running low again.  Donations are always accepted!

We'd like to welcome Kai Levan.to our room!  We've enjoyed getting to know him this week!
