January 17 Update...

Dear Parents,
Thanks for visiting today.  We've had a great week!  Check out below to see what we've been learning...

Phonics/Grammar: We learned our new spelling patterns for the week. We also learned about irregular verbs and how the spelling changes when writing the past tense form of the verb.

Reading: We read our book James and the Giant Peach. We wrote all about the characters, we wrote a summary of one chapter, and we wrote about our favorite event so far.  We read the book Happy Birthday, Martin Luther King.  We discussed the difference between main ideas and details and completed an organizer to show our understanding. We worked in small groups on fluency, comprehension, and responding to literature through questioning.

Writing:  We continued our unit on Opinion writing and book recommendations.  We learned how to write write a letter, convincing our audience to read our books.  We also talked about various shades of meaning in words and how to better our writing by being more descriptive (ie: instead of using the word "said', use whispered, declared, shouted, yelled, wailed, etc.)  We created a chart to use as a reference in our room.

Math:  We wrapped up our unit on plane shapes and partitioning shapes into halves, thirds, and fourths.  We completed several number talks on adding up to four two-digit numbers.  We also continued our work on multi-step problem solving.

Social Studies:  We read several books on Martin Luther King and learned all about his contributions to the civil rights movement.
