February 7 Update...

Dear Parents,

Thank you for visiting today.  It's good to be back in school again! When I asked you to pray for snow last week, I didn't mean for you to pray for so much snow that it shut down the city!!! I'll be more specific in my requests next time. Don't forget to check out the bottom of the blog for class reminders. We have a very busy week next week! Here's what we've been doing in class...

Spelling/Phonics: We learned how to read contractions correctly. We learned the short and long a spelling patterns as well as the /ir/ /ier/ and /ire/ spelling patterns.  We played SPARKLE and also worked in our Word Study Notebooks to help us learn these new patterns.

Reading: We read several chapters in James and the Giant Peach. We talked about the traits of the characters in this story and we identified actions and words that provide proof for the traits.  We also identified cause and effect relationships in the chapters from this week. We read the story Jack and the Beanstalk and we made a story retelling board.

Writing:  We wrote two summaries from our James and the Giant Peach book.

Math:  We used our clocks to show time to the 5-minute increment.  We also learned a new method to count collections of coins.  Our book buddies helped us with these two skills and we also played a fun game called "I Have, How Has?" to practice telling time.  Please practice these two skills at home!

Social Studies:  We finished our unit on Jackie Robinson and reviewed the contributions of Martin Luther King.  We played several review games and took our test today.

Classroom News and Announcements...

Congratulations to Lilleigh Akery for being chosen as our Celebrity this week!  Way to go!

Thank you Mrs. DeFoor for helping us with OSCARS on Thursday!  And thank you, parents, for encouraging this at home!  The kids are doing WONDERFUL!

Tonight is the Kemp Winter Dance at HILLGROVE high school beginning at 6:30.  I will be there and hope to see everyone!

Don't forget to send in addressed Valentines to exchange on Wednesday. Also, use that creativity to make a valentine carrier. Bring it to school Wednesday.

We have a performing arts field trip on Wednesday. We will be eating sack lunches, so if your child does not like the school sack lunch, please send one to school. We will be back to eat at school, but will be eating in the room.

I will be out  Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. Please do not email me with any information that needs to be addressed next week. Please email Mrs. Capes.

Remember we have WINTER BREAK from Thursday, Feb. 13-Tuesday, Feb. 19.  Enjoy your extra family time!
