April 18, 2014 Update...

Dear Parents,

Happy Easter!  I hope you have a wonderful weekend and the Easter Bunny brings you lots of CANDY!  Thank you to all the parents who helped out with the Math Easter Egg Hunt today. It was a huge success and the kids had fun time, but also a time to review many math skills. Thank you also, to all the parents who have donated Market Day items.  Please keep us in mind over the coming weeks as you visit the grocery store. I know we are still in need of tattoos, finger nail polish, and nail polish design pens and stickers. Check out below to see what we've been doing this week in class...

Phonics/Grammar:  We learned the ow/ou spelling patterns and the er/ear/eer spelling patterns.  We also learned all about adjectives and the nouns that they modify.  We learned how adjectives can make our writing more interesting.

Reading:  We read several chapters in Horns and Wrinkles. We completed a close reading, helping us build our vocabulary and using context clues to decode unfamiliar words.  We practiced our summary writing skills, and we looked closely at the characters to write about our favorite one.  We worked in small groups on chapter books.  Several groups finished up their 2nd round of book clubs and we began reading Sadako and The Thousand Paper Cranes; a story about a girl who survived the atom bomb in Hiroshima, Japan.  We are also working individually on fluency goals, quickly decoding words and reading at an appropriate rate with on level passages.  We read several nonfiction articles this week and learned ways of determining the main idea.  We looked closely at the titles, headings, first and last sentences, and the details.

Writing:  We learned about techniques that poets use when writing poems. We learned about metaphors and similes and we wrote several poems of our own.

Math:  We completed our unit on subtraction with regrouping.  We took our final assessment on addition and subtraction strategies.  We also have spent lots of time on memorizing our math facts. This is a skill that MUST be mastered and the only way to do this is to spend time every night until all math facts have been memorized.  Please devote time on this at home.  We will provide opportunities for children to practice additionally during the last 10 minutes of recess every day if needed.  I can't stress the importance of this enough. The children must be fluent with addition and subtraction facts before 3rd grade.

Social Studies: We began our unit on Wants and Needs. We talked about ways to earn income and the opportunity costs associated with spending money.  We will begin earning money in class on Monday in our check books.  Children will earn this money by making good choices and being responsible 2nd graders.  Money can also be deducted for poor choices. At the end of  a two week period, your child will buy tickets with his/her income that can be used during our Market Day.

Class News and Announcements...

Did I mention math facts need to be practiced every night?  If you didn't catch it before, MATH FACTS NEED TO BE PRACTICED EVERY NIGHT!

Congratulations to Sam Steinhauser and Kelsey Pratt for being chosen as this week's CELEBRITIES!!!  Way to go!

Thank you Mrs. Newlin for making the check books that our students will be using next week!

Thank you to Sam for bringing in his adorable kittens for us all to hold!  If you are interested in a kitten, we'll pass the word to Mrs. Steinhauser.

Next week, the CRCT begins for grades 3-5 on Wednesday. No visitors will be allowed in the building until after 11:30.  This is after our lunch time begins, so please make sure your child has everything they need for the day before coming to school. The doors will not be unlocked before 11:30.
