April 25, 2014 Update...

Hi Parents and Students!

We've had a fabulous week!  Our math fact competition is really heating up in room 216! I love the hard work and friendly competition I am seeing among the students.  As of today, our addition winner is David Donea with 20 problems in 31 seconds. Our subtraction winner is Camden Breeden with 20 problems in 38 seconds. Our multiplication winner is Gawain Wyatt with 20 problems in 53 seconds.  Way to go, students! Here is what else has been  happening in our wonderful classroom...

Phonics/Grammar:  We learned about the -ir/-ire/-ier spelling patterns  and the gn/kn/wr spelling patterns.  We also learned all about ADVERBS and how they add to the verbs in sentences by telling when, where, and how.  We compared these words with adjectives from last week's lessons.  We made an anchor chart to use as a reference and we completed several partner activities to help us learn about the job of an adverb.

Reading: We read several more chapters in Horns and Wrinkles.  We learned how to illustrate a chapter to represent the main idea, how to summarize a passage including language used in the passage, and we looked at cause and effect relationships in these chapters.  We also worked in small groups with our chapter books. We read individually with students to determine their spring reading level as well.

Math: We completed our unit on addition and subtraction with regrouping. We began discussing multiplication. We learned three ways to model a multiplication problem; using sets, arrays, and repeated addition on a number line.  We began our Multiplication flip books, which will help us memorize our multiplication facts.

Writing:  We discovered the art of haiku poetry this week in writing.  We learned that this type of poetry began in Japan, is usually about nature, and follows a syllable pattern of 5-7-5.  We practiced writing our own haiku poems.

Class News and Reminders...

Tuesday is our field trip to the Botanical Gardens.  Mrs. Barfield and Mr. Black will be our chaperons.  All others are welcome to attend as well.  Check the Atlanta Botanical Gardens website for admission information.  If you plan to come with us, please remember the doors at Kemp will be locked and visitors will not be admitted into the building on Tuesday. You may remain in your cars and follow the buses from the car rider lane.

Our tentative end of year class party will be after school on Thursday, May 15.  We will meet up here at the pavilion at 5:00 for a picnic dinner (every family will provide their own food), which will be followed by a little friendly game of KICKBALL!  We should be wrapped up by 7:00.  All in the family are welcome to join us as we celebrate a wonderful year and look forward to THIRD GRADE together!
