We had a wonderful week! We finished up several units of study this week. Please make sure your child dedicates some time to practicing his/her presentation on the region travel brochure. We'll begin presentations on Wednesday, September 4th. Please check out below to see what we've been doing this week.
Phonics/Spelling: We studied words with digraphs (sh,ch,th,wh) and we studied words with long and short a sounds with irregular spelling (a_e/ai/a). We completed a sort, brainstormed words for our charts, practiced several ways to study our words, and looked at five bonus words that we need to know how to read and write.
Reading: We read five chapters from Sarah, Plain and Tall. We talked about cause/effect, problem/resolution, and comparing elements of a story. We also worked on ways to read with a friend and practiced these ways; choral reading (reading together), echo reading (one person reads page then the other person reads the same page) and taking turns (each person reads a section). Since our visit to the library last week, your child is able to have two books checked out at all times. I allow the children to go to the library after morning work is complete or during our reading time. We are working on getting AR installed on our desktop computers, so in the meantime, keep reading!
Math: We completed our unit on number representation to 1000. We've learned all about the difference between "place" and "value" as well as how to show numbers in various forms. We also began looking at strategies to use mentally when solving certain types of computation problems during our number talks.
Social Studies: We completed our unit on the five Georgia regions and began discussing the seven major rivers in our state (St. Mary's, Ocmulgee, Oconee, Chattahoochee, Flint, Savannah, and Altamaha). It would be a great idea for your child to review the location of these rivers as well as the location of the regions before next week's test.
Writing: We learned how authors begin stories with BOLD BEGINNINGS to hook the reader's attention. We talked about different strategies we can incorporate into our own writing. We also looked at two different realistic fiction stories and talked about the writer's intent. We compared the two stories and looked at the structure of the story.
