September 6 Update...

Dear Parents,
I hope you are enjoying this beautiful weekend.  We had such a wonderful week in room 216!  First and Foremost, we want to give a HUGE thank you to Mrs. Newlin, Mrs. Abrams, and Mrs. DeFoor for planning and executing an amazing culminating activity on Georgia's regions and rivers this past Friday.  The children made maps out of cookie dough and then labeled the landforms of the regions and rivers with various items.  Most of "Georgia" was eaten, but you may want to check your child's bookbag for any remnants before the weekend is up!  Check out below to find out what else we've been doing in class...

Phonics/Spelling: This week, we worked on spelling rules that accompany long and short vowel sounds as well as memorizing the spelling of five new bonus words.  Everyone is doing so wonderful on these tests!  Keep up the extra time devoted to studying.

Math:  We completed the SMI assessment in the computer lab with Mrs. Harbuck. You will be receiving your child's score on this as well as SRI on Monday.  Details are included with the scores. We completed our unit on Place Value and Number Representation. Next week, we'll be moving on to addition and subtraction strategies and building fluency in equations with sums to 20.

Reading: We completed our chapter book, Sarah, Plain and Tall.  We learned all about character traits and how we can find evidence in the text to support these traits.  We took a final assessment, choosing one character from the story and writing about how that character changed throughout the story.

Writing: In class, we are continuing our study of how to write a narrative.  We reviewed the important steps that help writers plan and then carry out their writing and we learned what punctuation to use when adding dialogue to narratives.

Social Studies:  We completed our unit on Regions and Rivers. We played several games to help us memorize the location of the regions and rivers. We reviewed the characteristics of each region while making a chart and we have learned so much by listening to the AWESOME travel brochure presentations. We have a few more to listen to on Monday.

Class News and Announcements...

The book fair is currently going on at Kemp Elementary!  Your children visited the fair on Friday to  make their wish lists. There are some amazing books for your children there, as well as some suggestions we have made for our classroom library (check out our WISH LIST if you visit the fair).  Children will be able to buy books up until Thursday of next week.

The Kemp Fundraiser ended Friday. Send in your collections Monday. ALSO NO MORE MONKEYS at school please.  Those little boogers are cute, but tend to be distracting!

Congratulations to Caroline Okraski for being our CELEBRITY this week!!!!

Thank you to Mrs. Newlin and Mrs. Abrams for organizing our September helpers and for getting our OSCARS book and charts ready for the students.

Please remember to encourage your child to pick some topics from the OSCARS sheet to test on. They will have an opportunity EVERY THURSDAY to test on their chosen topics.  Students will then earn prizes at various levels.  This is a great opportunity for students to show that they are going above and beyond 2nd grade expectations!

Our "EXTRA SNACK" basket is running low.  I have two requests...If you have extra individually wrapped snacks that you would like to donate, we'd love them. AND, please remember to send your child a healthy snack every day.  Please no candy, juice, or chocolatey treats! And if you don't believe sugar has an effect on children, I have a video I made after last Friday's cookie dough project...WOW!
