November 1 Update...

Dear Parents,
Thank you for visiting today!  We had a wonderful week, although THURSDAY was not our favorite day as teachers!  Hahaha, at one point we decided Halloween really should be a holiday for all kids age 10 and under.  Here at Kemp, we are beginning a new character education program called "The Leader in Me". It is a wonderful program and fits in nicely with the Rules to Live By that we currently are implementing in our classroom.  We will be talking about one new character trait each week and this week we are focusing on BE PROACTIVE.  Ways to incorporate this into our daily lives will be to not blame others for our actions, to take responsibility when we make poor choices, to be in charge of our own learning,  and to stand up for what we believe in. I We make plans so we can be successful.  We'd love to see you discussing and implementing these character traits at home as well!  See what else we've been learning about this week...

Phonics/Spelling:  We learned all about our c/ck words and the long o spelling patterns. We also learned about plurals vs. possessives.  We worked on white boards to segment longer more challenging words into syllables to help sound them out.

Reading:  We began our new chapter book read aloud, The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket.  This book is part of a series, so I'm hoping to get some kids interested in reading the other books that follow.  In reading, we also are working on finishing up our individual chapter books in small groups, reading shorter passages to work on fluency, and using context clues to answer questions.

Writing: We completed our first informational paper on Turtles. This was  a guided writing activity where we collected our facts from various resources, made a table of contents with our main ideas, wrote each page, then created a glossary with important words. These books are hanging in our hallway and we are so proud of the kids' hard work on this!  Come check them out!  The books will be coming home in another week or so for you to read.

Math:  We continued our work on number representation and comparing larger numbers when they are in various forms (expanded, word, base ten).  We worked on solving some very challenging word problems.  We continued our work on solving missing addend problems as well as beginning to develop strategies for adding and subtracting when regrouping or borrowing is required. please keep in mind we do not teach the traditional algorithm this year.

Social Studies:  We learned about James Oglethorpe and his contributions to our state. We learned that he began a colony, named it, and started the settlement of Savannah. We also learned all about the character traits that he possessed.

Class News and Announcements...

We will have a special event in November on the 20th (Wednesday).  I would love to have four parent volunteers help with this event.  The first four to respond to me by email will be our helpers!  Information for your child will be coming home soon.

We haven't gotten our dates for the Holiday party yet, but as soon as we do, I will pass that information along.  This party will be open to all parents, but we will need several parent volunteers to be in charge of the activities. If you are interested in planning and then heading up a special activity, let me know and I will pass your name along to Mrs. Abrams and Mrs. Newlin so they can contact you.

Thank you to Mrs. Abrams, Mrs. Newlin, Mr. Beasley, Mrs. Clark, Mrs. DeFoor, and Mrs. Barfield for their help with our Pumpkin centers.  And a special thank you to Mrs. Abrams and Mrs. Newlin for organizing and planning all of our activities!

Congratulations to SHANNEN HERNANDEZ for being chosen as this week's Celebrity of the Week!!! Way to go, Shannen!

Remember to encourage your child to work on the STUDY ISLAND tasks!  This is an ongoing homework assignment that needs to be completed by Dec. 13.
