November 8, 2013 Update...

Hello Parents,

Thank you for visiting today!  We've had an amazing week. We love the 2nd nine weeks as teachers. It's now that our routine is firmly established and the kids are showing us such amazing growth each and every week!  Check out below to see what we've been doing this week...

Phonics/Spelling:  We learned all about the short and long a and the short and long u spelling patterns.  We completed a sort in our Words Their Way book, we sorted again based on short and long vowels, we played many rounds of SPARKLE to practice our words and then we BLEW the TEST out of the WATER on FRIDAY!!! In grammar, we focused on using commas in a series and we reviewed capitalization and punctuation rules as well. HEADS UP...next week, we'll be working on the homophones THEIR/THEY'RE/THERE and TOO/TWO/TO. Start practicing the meaning now.

Reading: We read four chapters in our chapter book.  We worked on identifying character traits, inferencing, and answering comprehension questions. We practiced our fluency in small groups as well as in whole group while working on silly challenge fluency phrases.  We read the book The Stranger, by Chris Van Allsburg and used our inferencing skills to figure out who the stranger in the book was (Jack Frost).  We also completed a  close reading of the more challenging vocabulary words in order to build that vocab knowledge.

Writing:  We worked on refining our editing and revising skills, and we wrote an informational paragraph on James Oglethorpe. We focused on making sure we began and ended with a topic sentence and wrote details in order of his life.

Math: We finished up our unit on number representation to 1000 and comparing numbers to 1000.  We began previewing double and triple digit with regrouping (No, not the algorithm). We will use base ten, expanded form, and using an open number line to solve computation problems to 1000.

Social Studies:  We learned about James Oglethorpe, who  started the colony of Georgia.

Class News and Information...

Congratulations Gavin Myers for being chosen as our CELEBRITY this week!  Way to go!

Parents, hopefully you read last week's blog and were able to sign up to volunteer for OSCARS if that is something that interests you.  Check last week's blog for the details if you are still interested. We'll post the dates for March, April, and May in February.

Due to our limited space in the classroom and the number of kids we have, for certain activities we are unable to open it up to all parents to come into the room.  Please let me know if you have not been in and we will certainly work something out so you can also participate in our room in some capacity.  Our holiday party will be open to everyone!
