12/11/08 Update...

Hi Parents and Students,

Can you believe we are almost halfway through second grade? Time flies when you are having fun! Apart from all of this fun, we've managed to get so much learning accomplished this year. As we get ready to break for two weeks, this is an excellent opportunity to get in a routine of practicing the skills we have learned so far at home. I would suggest that every student have a journal for creative writing at home. Your child should be writing in this journal 2-3 times per week. It is a good idea to give your child a prompt that encourages creativity and allows for their individual voice and style to come through. Some good examples would be...

1. Give a silly question to answer like "Would you rather be able to fly or have super strength?"
2. Pretend you are the moon, writing a story to the sun. What would you say?
3. If you could be any animal, what would you be? Why?
4. After reading your 20 minutes for the night, pretend you are the main character of your story. Write a letter to someone.

A journal shouldn't be "corrected", but it is a great idea to model good writing if you notice that your child is having difficulty in any particular area. Maybe Mom or Dad could even do a journal entry a few nights a week! Have fun writing!

There will be no extra credit this week. Be on the lookout the first week in January for an update!
