Mid-Week Update for January 21st...

Hello Parents and Students,

Thank you for visiting today. What a historic week we have had! We have all enjoyed learning about the inauguration process as well as the historic significance of President Obama taking office. This event has given us lots to write about as we learn the components of persuasive writing. Persuasive writing allows the writer to convey his or her opinion backed up by supporting reasons and details. Below, you will see the important components of this type of writing. After that, check out the bonus assignment!

Persuasive Writing Components:
1. Begin with a topic sentence that conveys your opinion. Use words like "I feel", "I think", or "In my opinion" to let the reader know your position.
2. Back up your opinion with supporting reasons. If possible, these reasons should be factual.
3. After each reason, extend your writing by providing a further explanation or detail about that specific reason.
4. End with a closing sentence that restates your opinion in a different way.

Bonus Assignment: Due Date January 28th
Do you think Mrs. Wadsworth should assign homework every night? Begin by stating your opinion! Then tell me three reasons why you believe what you believe. Remember, you can turn your "average" paper into an "excellent" paper by supporting each reason with an explanation or detail. You must type your paper on the computer. If you use a graphic organizer, staple this to the back of your typed paragraph and turn in to me by next Wednesday for your choice of a trip to the prize box or a pass to eat in the classroom with a friend.
